Proof (2005)

When I read this movie’s synopsis, I thought here’s something I would like. It seems good. It’s also a Pulitzer Prize winning play I think and the last play-turned-movie that I watched was Closer and I loved that. It was really great.. So this should be good. If you read the synopsis you’d think that it sounds like A Beautiful Mind. Its because the writer based the story on John Nash the guy A Beautiful was based on. The story: Anthony Hopkins plays this Maths genius who in his early 20s made two great contributions to the world of mathematics. He has ever since then tried to recapture that genius and find another proof. In the process he loses his mind. Gwyneth Paltrow play Catherine the loyal daughter who takes care of him refusing to put him in a home and giving up school and basically having a life until the day he died. When her father dies she seems kind of stranded not knowing what to make out of her life. She becomes angry with her sister who seemed to have taken no role in taking care of their father. And it doesn’t help that she comes a day or so before the funeral and fuss about Catherine. I liked that scene at the funeral where Catherine started attacking the people who attended her father’s funeral and their phoniness by saying…where were all of them when he was sick. After her father’s death Catherine is forced to rethink her life and she fears that she might not only inherit his genius but also his insanity. Catherine starts to befriend an ex student of her father, Hal, who has been hanging around the house searching for anything that may lead to a proof that her father might have written when he was crazy. And of course they start to fall for each other, and she lets Hal find a proof which she claims that she has written…not her father, the genius. Of course Hal doesn’t believe her. So does the sister and this to her, validates the fact that Catherine is going crazy and wants her to get help. Even we as the audience wonders if she really is crazy. We find out in the end. A great movie. An emotional drama. A fine performance. Why have I heard little, close to nothing about it? Am I the only one who thought it was good?

Joe the King (1999)

I’ve never even heard about this movie before. I was just looking for a movie to watch and I found this one. The storyline sounds familiar and interesting and I thought I might like it. Joe is this rebellious working class kid who is about 14. This movie is basically about his life. I guess its what you call a coming of age story… what is that suppose to mean anyway. Joe has a pretty tough life. He’s poor. He’s father is a drunk and owes people in the neighbourhood money. He’s father is also the school janitor which means Joe does not have it easy at school. His mother works all the time. He’s a pretty neglected kid. He also works at this crappy dirty restaurant washing dishes. So that is Joe’s life. In the end he gets caught stealing his boss’s money and is sent to juvenile hall. The last scene, as he is walking along the hallway to his cell, Joe turns around and stares at us. The camera focuses on his face. I thought that was like the last scene from 400 Blows. Though in 400 Blows the boy is running. But in both, the camera is on the boy. I liked the movie. But I probably won’t watch it again.

Match Point (2005)

This is the first Woody Allen movie that I’ve watched. And I liked it. I really liked it. It has drama, romance and is also a thriller. It makes me wonder if all his movies are this good. I’ve always kinda thought that Woody Allen movies were those artsy types that I probably couldn’t understand. Match Point stars Jonathan Rhys Meyer as Chris an ex tennis pro who is now a coach for an exclusive country club for England’s upper class. While coaching he meets Tom and they became friends fast. Chris then has a relationship with Chloe, Tom’s sister and later marries her. Chloe came with a comfortable high paying job, a great huge apartment and most importantly a father with deep pockets. Chris seems to be making…or rather marrying into the perfect, extremely comfortable life. Until he starts an affair with Nola (Scarlett Johansson) who is Tom’s fiancée. It’s really funny…well I thought it was…to see Chris scurry around trying to cover up his affair. Especially when he works for Chloe’s father’s company. So it was really hard for him you see, to get breaks in between work to see Nola. And the ending, I really didn’t think the end would be as it was. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone so all I can say is that Chris committed the perfect crime. I say watch this. It’s really good.

The New World (2005)

The new world they’re refering here is of course America. The story is of Pocahontas and the men she was in love with. There was John Smith whose life she supposedly saved played by Colin Farrell. There’s the the guy she married another John…John Rolfe played by Christian Bale. And Pocahontas herself is played by this girl who was I think only 14…can you believe it. How old was Pocahontas suppsed to be anyway? The movie itself I would say was ok. the shot were quite pretty. But I thought it was trying to be overly poetic with the narration. Usually I really like movies with narration…but not this one. I wanted to watch this movie primarily because I’ve watched Disney’s Pocahontas, so I wanted to know what happen after that.I wonder how true this movie is to historical facts?Watch it if you wondered whatever happened to Pocahontas.

Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005)

I guess its quite unfair for me to even write about this one since I didn’t even finish watching it…I was really tired and fell asleep halfway. It didn’t help that I found it quite a bore too. Hey it wasn’t my idea to watch it. My mom wanted to watch fun movies. Those family type of comedies I guess. She had already watched the first one, so when the second one came out on dvd I borrowed it for her. The second one starts I think about 2 years after the first one left off. The eldest daughter is married and having a baby. Hilary Duff’s character is college bound and has a summer internship with some famous fashion magazine. I mean why does she seems to play smart characters…in A Cinderlla Story her character went to Princeton. Can anyone believe that?Well ok…ok lets get back to the story. Steve Martin’s character wanted the family to go on a family vacation at this summer place they used to go to and there they meet an old family rival and have some childish competition. I fell asleep just about there. I don’t what happens after that…Oh wait…of course I do…Everyone lives Happily Ever After. Enough said.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

This is one of those movies that I’d thought that one day I’ll just catch it on tv. I mean its like one of the most popular romantic comedy out there, and you’d think that channel 5 would play it a few times instead of another Jurassic park movie. But nooo…So I finally borrowed.Well what can I say it sure is enjoyable.Has some witty and funny dialogue. The whole can men and women be friends thing. The main reason I wanted to watch this movie in the first place is because its very popular and gets mentioned a lot. So I watched it and probably wouldn’t watch it again. I say just watch it because its one of those movies you want to know why its so popular.

Half Light (2006)

Most people probably haven’t even heard of this movie and undoubtedly the only recognizable name here is Demi Moore. Now we haven’t seen her acting in anything in quite a long time. What made me want to watch this movie is that it seemed to have some sort of a supernatural theme and I haven’t seen a good ghost story in a long time either. And this little movie is not entirely bad.So basically this movie centers around Rachel (Demi Moore) who’s a mystery writer who had just lost a child. With the help of a friend, she found a little house in some isolated part of the country to help her focus on writing a novel she’s under contract to finish. There she befriends a lighthouse keeper who is sensitive towards her loss and worries.Rachel soon gets the feeling that she’s being haunted by her dead son. Things start to unravel and at one point of time I wondered if this was like one of those movies like Flightplan and the Forgotten where we’re suppose to guess if Rachel was crazy and the whole thing about a dead son was just her imagination.Well things fall into place and she isn’t.There are ghosts too. An ok movie overall. Watch it if you like supernatural movies. Not a scary one if you thought it was. And I wouldn’t really watch it again.
