Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette the story of the Austrian girl who by the age of 19 became France’s Queen.

I love watching period dramas…partly because I love their beautiful period costumes. Marie Antoinette is one of the latest period dramas coming out in October….I’m not sure when it will be released in Singapore though…maybe several weeks later…I hope it does get released here.

Sofia Coppola who directed the Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation directs Marie Antoinette. I love the Virgin Suicides, it’s a beautiful and a hauntingly narrated tale of five sisters…Lost in translation on the other hand…I can’t quite understand. Well any way back to this one, it clearly seems from the posters and the trailer, the movie will be a rather modernized telling of Marie Antoinette’s story. That would be interesting…I hope it works. I must say, I like the trailers, the movie seems colourful and well…pretty…. so does the posters don’t you think? And the costumes are gorgeous too. Kirsten Dunst even graced the cover of Vogue as Marie Antoinette in September’s issue.

This is one movie I’m looking forward to.

Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

I don’t like this one. Well mostly I just don’t get it. The only reason I watched it is because I’ve heard quite a lot about it…so I wanted to see it for myself. I don’t really find it funny…again because I don’t really quite get the jokes. The characters look like blur zombies going in and out of a scene. And why does everyone dresses like they were in the 80’s when the movie is clearly in the present as Napolean’s brother has a chat room girlfriend. Overall I didn’t enjoy watching it. Complete waste of time. And IMDB rated it 7/10…What???

Rumour Has It (2005)

If you haven’t watched or read the Graduate you probably wouldn’t really understand some of the stuff the movie is saying. I say go and watch the Graduate first. It’s this really good…and funny movie about this young graduate having an affair with an older woman and later falls in love with her daughter. It stars a young Dustin Hoffman as the Graduate.

I guess that’s pretty much what Rumour Has It, has to carry it, its association with the Graduate. I mean when I heard there was going to be a movie about an actual rumour that there was an actual Robinsons…I thought I’m going to have to catch that movie. I was more fascinated with the rumour that there is a Robinsons, than the movie.
The movie itself is ok. Quite funny. The Graduate is a classic , Rumour Has It is basically your typical light hearted fun, funny movie.

From Print to Screen

Three novels that I’m eagerly anticipating their screen adaptations are , The and The Picture of .

Atonement written by Ian McEwan is the story of 13 year Briony whose imaginative mind has resulted the imprisonment of Robbie, her sister’s Cecilia lover, due to allegations she made, that she saw him sexually attack her cousin, Lola. The events cause a rift in the whole family as Cecilia leaves her family, defending Robbie. The novel was great and has become one of my favourite reads. Briony is such and interesting, engaging character, a real child, and it would be interesting to see how her character is played out. Atonement is said to be presently filming. Keira Knightley stars as Cecilia and Ramola Garai stars Briony. Can’t wait to see this on screen although I can’t quite picture Keira as Cecilia.

The Lovely Bones. I almost did not want to read this. A novel about a girl who dies goes to heaven and watches her family from above. That sounds a bit dumb and not the least bit creative. But I’ve heard so much about it and just went and gave it a read. Susie is only 14 and has not yet lived her life but has been horrifically raped and murdered by a neighbour. She recalls from heaven her rape and murder and watches how her family comes to terms with her death and falls apart. An ultimately sad story. Get ready the tissue; this movie is going one big tearjerker. Peter Jackson is set to direct this. We’ll get to see him do a drama. According to IMDB, he and his fellow scriptwriters are still working on the screenplay. I say, you better get it right. And Dakota Fanning is rumoured to play Suzie. Well I think they should get someone who’s actually 14 to play Susie and I’d prefer to see someone…less famous.

The Picture of Dorian Gray. I love this book by Oscar Wilde. Dorian Gray is a young man who is blessed with wonderfully boyish good looks and his friends Basil Hallward the artist and Lord Henry Wotton tell him ever so often. When he sees for the very first time the portrait that Basil has been painting of him, he becomes ridiculously jealous of the painting. Why should he grow old and the man in the painting remains young forever? In a fit of jealousy he made a sold his soul. He would remain young and the painting wound age in his place. Now, does that not sound like a wonderfully interesting story? Yes? Yes, of course. Lets hope the movie can faithfully capture the book. Now there are actually two movies being made. One to be released this year starring David Gallagher as Dorian. David plays Simon in 7th Heaven…and if you have seen him before, you’d probably feel the same way, he is not Dorian!…but maybe I’m wrong. Dorian has a certain air about him and I pictured Ryan Phillippe to be the perfect Dorian, and he was at some time if I’m not mistaken rumoured to play Dorian in the 2007 movie. He would have been perfect. But now in his thirties, Ryan is sadly too old. Whatever it is this screen adaptation is what I am watching out for.

Look out for these 4 movies in 2006-2007.

Forrest Gump (1994)

“My momma says life is like a box of chocolate. You never know what you’re gonna get” I always thought…what??…you’re gonna get chocolate of course from a box of ‘chocolates’. It was only when I was older that I realised that Forrest’s mother was probably referring to the types of chocolate that has fillings such as nuts, caramel or some other sugary stuff.

Well anyway, I’ve watched this before of course, but that was a couple of years ago and I can’t quite remember what’s its all about, so as usual I watched it again.

Forrest Gump is an endearing story of a man who despite having an I.Q that is lower than an average person still had the courage to do great things and lived a noble humbled life. I’m sure the reason why he had the courage to do some of the things he did is because he never understood fully the possible consequences to his actions…thus he has no fear. Like when he went back into the jungle during the Vietnam War to save his platoon … he probably doesn’t realise what could happen if the enemy caught him.

Anyway this movie won a bunch of Oscars and I’m sure several other great awards. It is a very touching story…I like it…but it wouldn’t be a favourite. I didn’t even bother with the extra features. Unless I forget the story again…I’ll probably never watch it again.
