Robin Williams plays Gabriel Noone a radio host. Through a friend he strikes a long distance telephone relationship with a boy who is one of his biggest fan. Soon he begins to question the boy’s identity…is he even real??

The movie starts out ok.The tone is dark and moody. Gabriel’s lover has recently decided to take a break…and he’s pretty depressed about it. So when a mysterious boy comes along under the guise of a fan with a tormented past…Gabriel give his full attention to this boy…sympathizes…becomes his friend and all…diverting his mind away from his failed relationship. Then his lover notices that boy’s voice sounded similar to the boy’s guardian,Donna….here’s the thing though….I can’t see the resemblance…too me they are two different voices…then again…what we get is Gabriel’s perspective…and to him they are two different people…Soon Gabriel comes to see there is something really wrong and he goes to meet Donna to get the truth…some suspenseful scenes are thrown our away…but the end is disappointingly unsatisfying…there was no real climax…since the whole plot has been pretty predictable the whole way…they should have at least thrown in a twist ending…In the end we never did get to know who Donna really was…sure she is loony…but who is she?…and who the boy was too?…also would love to know more about the true story the movie was inspired by…if only they included it as a feature on a DVD…that would have been interesting… Overall, I felt that the movie is a mystery thriller that fails to live up to its potential. Could have been a lot better…right now…it looks like a made for tv thriller.

Hey don’t they look alike. I pretty much know nothing of this new flick Shortcut to Happiness but from the brief plot outline on IMDB…it does not only have a similar plot to Bedazzled…even the posters look alike…the red heels…the tail…the only difference…the guys’ legs(big deal) Hey its a copycat world. To actually think…someone actually got paid to come up with that poster…

lake-house.jpg

The Lake House is …if you don’t already know it is a remake of a Korean movie called Il Mare…Really curious if there were a lot of changes made compared to the original…lake-house2.jpgOk so the movie revolves around Kate a lonely workaholic doctor who has just moved out of her lake house, and she leaves a message in the mailbox for the next resident…So guess who gets this message…Alex a lonely architect who is the former owner…only thing is…he’s in 2004…and she’s in 2006. Impossible right? But it does happen to these two characters…and so they continue corresponding through the magical mailbox…soon love blossoms. Will they ever get to meet?

You know what…I quite like this movie…and its not even a genre that I usually particular enjoy watching. But I like it. The fall/winter setting was beautiful. The lake house was beautiful…I would never want to live in a glass house like that but I can’t deny its gorgeous. The characters were likable…Nice to see Keanu and Sandra acting together again, though…they share very little screen time together. Anyhow they still look good.lake-house1.jpg The perfect on screen couple. The plot, was ok…interesting enough and easy to follow. Quite different from most and there was even a climatic scene near the end…where the movie could go either way. Of course the whole plot with mailbox as the gateway to two time periods defies all logic…but what the heck…its a romantic fantasy and somehow it works. You find yourself rooting for the characters to arrive at the happiness they seek. Most of all…the end was satisfying…I mean…when you watch a romance or romantic/comedy movie…what type of ending would you want to see? (referring to the Break Up here)…So if you want to watch a charming romance flick this is it.

Ok so I was at the bookstore today…browsing movie magazines, and I stumbled upon this small section in a DVD magazine…dedicated to readers collection of DVDs…where readers get to boast the huge collection they have …with pictures and all. And wow…the collection they feature was huge…This guy had like close to 3000 DVD…Wow. And of course he doesn’t have the biggest…Some other guy has like close to 14000 DVDs. Lets do a calculation. How much do I need to get myself 14000 DVD assuming each costs at least $25….14000×25=350000…again Wow.Thats a lot of money. Haha…If only I have that much…my collection is pretty pathetic…not worth mentioning…Then again why would I want 14000 DVDs…other then…to show it off in a magazine…I’d want only the good ones…the ones I actually like…the ones I can watch over and over again…thats maybe like a 1000 at most. 🙂 or maybe a lot less.

The Golden Compass

golden.jpg

View trailer here. Ok…I kinda like the poster. The icy blue shades…kinda makes you think its a Snow Queen movie of some sort…and the huge polar bear reminds of those polar bears in Chronicles of Narnia. The trailer…hmm didn’t really like it…again looks too much like Narnia…from the colours…the effects…even how the animal looks like…Neither can I really get what the movie is about…and from my perspective…it looks all too similar to Narnia. Sure the poster and trailer looks pretty and all…but overall it doesn’t really grab me.

Becoming Jane

jane4.jpg

View the trailers here and here. Ok I love period/costume dramas. I love the effort trying to keep the language/settings/costumes true to the era. And I’m really looking forward to this. I like the trailers and all. The scenes look pretty…of course it definitely reminds me of Mansfield Park and Pride and Prejudice…I hope its as good.

Enchanted

View the trailer here. The trailer is out…but not the poster…thats weird. Haha…this film looks cute. The trailer starts off like the typical old fashion Disney fairytale with the whole singing thing… suddenly we see the princess being push into the fountain…and drops right into the real world…then she goes around New York looking for a way to get home to her prince…and ta da …she bumps into McDreamy. You know what I’m interested…seems like a fun comedy watch…How will a fairytale princess survive in the real world…

I Know Who Killed Me

iknow.jpg

View the trailer here. Hmm the blue glowing flower…it does look mysterious…with the blood dripping off it at the bottom…but other than that I don’t get the significance of the flower…what does it suppose to mean? This must be Lindsay Lohan’s first thriller right? The trailer is so so…has the typical trailer of a thriller look. First we meets Aubrey…then she goes missing…and when she’s found…it isn’t really Aubrey…its Dakota…a girl who looks like Aubrey ( Lindsay back to her Parent Trap days playing twins?)…Are they really twins? Different people? Or is the case of a split personality? I’m keen to watch this. I wanna know what happens. If I have to make a guess here…I think its the split personality thing.

Bratz

bratz1.jpg

View the trailer here. Another poster out. Now we get to see part of their face. The trailer is ok I guess for teenagers. We see some pretty girls wearing some pretty clothes…talking about being BFF (I hate the stupid BFF things)…Then we meet a mean girl who shows them the cliques ( like in Mean Girls isn’t it) at school and wants to seperate them (aww…what a major disaster)…somewhere along they do join the cliques and weren’t BFFs anymore…One day all being stuck at detention…they reunite believing that they should all be themselves and BFFs again…or something like that. Frankly I’m not really interested in this little flick…but I might just watch it…just to see how bad it could be…cause it does look a little crappy. Now I’m wondering when are they going to make a live action movie of Barbie.

When are we ever gonna see Catcher in the Rye on the big screen…probably never right…And since I am a fan of the book…and love movies…I do hope that an adaptation will be made. Well for now what we get are movies/stories inspired by the book…and what we have here is a flick where a troubled teenager, who feels strongly that the book relates to what he’s going through, goes on a journey to meet J.D Salinger.

You know what…this movie was extremely dull and boring…trying way too hard to be a serious thought provoking flick…instead it looks like a typical straight to video teen flick about an angst ridden teen.

** May contain Spoilers**

Firstly, I hardly believe D.J Qualls as Neil the rebellious teenager…that confrontation scene with a fellow classmate…that was far fetch…he was hardly intimidating…the other guys could easily have jump him some other time. And tell me what are the chances of a pretty girl like T.J having a crush on Neil before she even gets to know him…Then the whole trip to New York thing…the whole self exploration thing…meeting with some trouble and shady people…wanting to kill J.D Salinger….what issit with fans trying to kill their supposed heroes anyway…?? And of course it all had to end with T.J being sick and dying…rather typical isn’t it …?? But then again the problem isn’t with how typical the storyline is…its how it was told…it was weak…you’d hardly feel anything for the characters.

I say…if you absolutely have to watch it cause of its relation to Catcher in the Rye…I’d advise you to just rent it…it’s not for keeps.

peter.jpg

I’ve never read or seen the play which was written by JM Barrie. What I know of Peter Pan is based on the Disney movie which I saw ages ago and that Hook movie where Robin Williams play the adult Peter Pan…yes go figure. So I do know the basic storyline. Wendy the girl on the verge of womanhood who has been told by her parents to grow up. Peter , the boy who never grows up. Peter listening to Wendy’s stories and taking her and her brothers away to Neverland. Then there’s the Lost Boys and of course Captain Hook…yes I do know the basic. Have to say though that even as a child Peter Pan just wasn’t the story that I was really particularly interested off or fascinated by.

peter2.jpg

But I am really really glad to have finally decided to watch this movie four years after its theatrical release. This movie was fantastic. It was magical. I loved the fact they used pretty much relative unknowns to play the lead of Peter and Wendy…and they truly were their part and there was great chemistry between the leads too. Jeremy’s Peter was brash, cocky, charming, brave and mischievous…He was the boy who never grew up. And boy did he really flew…Must be hard on his part doing all those stunts. And then there’s Wendy the girl who captured Peter’s attention and ours too. Rachel’s Wendy was sweet, innocent, wide eyed with curiosity, brave, adventurous, maternal and extremely mature with the inevitable fact that in the end they all had to go home and grow up.

peter1.jpg

The story itself was great with all its symbolism and was told in such a charming manner. You know what… I also thought the set was pretty cool too. From Captain Hook’s ship to the Lost Boys’cave to the forests of Neverland…it looks like the ultimate playground for the children who never grow up. Wish you could explore and fly too don’t you? Honestly I never thought I would enjoy or like the movie as I did…I finally get why the story of Peter Pan appealed to a lot of people. By the end of it…I wanted to be 12 again too. I mean I’d rather be 12 and hate the idea of growing than actually be a grown up.

I loved it. I found the movie truly magical. Great fun for kids and the whole family. I would definitely recommend this movie.

A struggling actress gets brutally killed and the cops are scrambling to solve the murder…film noir style of course.

What is film noir? That is the question… I went to wikipedia and searched for it. So its basically a stylish crime drama that’s usually visually black and white or using dark tones. Usually between 1940’s-1950’s. And of course they usually have the narration thing. A grim brooding mysterious voice. “ It was a dark wet night. We were waiting outside the suspects when…”Haha…that’s how they usually start of right? Anyway I didn’t read the whole wikipedia article…just too long…I’m not a film student.

dahlia1.jpgdahlia.jpg

I’m not really sure what I think of the film. It was interesting to say the least…seeing that I’m not familiar with the whole film noir genre…this is only the second film of the genre that I’ve seen. The first being Brick…but Brick one could say was a modern take…an adaptation of the classic film noir…where the setting is a high school…and I thought Brick was cool…smart and slick. Way way different from anything I’ve ever seen. I didn’t think the same way about the Black Dahlia.

The Black Dahlia was dark, grim, long and dreary. Things just seemed overly dramatic and sensual (was this supposed to be so?) I was also under the impression that the movie would be more on the case…the mystery of her death…but it took a turn and instead focused on how the case consumed a pair of detectives and a girlfriend (ok again…maybe this was the case in the book which the movie was based on). In the end…I was rather lost…couldn’t keep up with all the plots…I guess maybe film noir isn’t the genre for me. But I would definitely choose Brick over this.

John Tucker Must Die (2006)

A couple of high school girls decide to get back at the school jock for three timing them by using the new girl as bait.

First I have to say I actually like the movie’s poster. And with a title like that…I never knew it was a teen flick ( before it was actually released of course)…I actually thought it was something like Kill Bill…only more cheeky. It was only after checking it on IMDB did I find it was a teen flick. And even the trailer looks pretty good. So yes I was interested to see how the actual film was going to turn out.

Seeing that this is a teen flick, my expectations weren’t very high…thus I didn’t find the movie quite bad. It was cute, fun, flirty and cheeky…and there were even a few laughs here and there. The storyline…it has been said.. does borrow some elements from mean girls…the sabotaging the popular student…etc..but come on its a teen flick…you can hardly expect it to be original. And sure this flick has its cheesy moments…typical predictable plot (new girl transform into popular girl)…and corny dialogue…but overall I still enjoyed it…still found it entertaining…wait…you know what…the ending wasn’t all that predictable. I guess the trick is to leave all expectations at the door.
I did though find the cast to be too old to play the characters they’re playing…especially Ashanti and Jesse Metcalfe…just because you’re good looking does not mean you look young enough to play a 17 year old.

The River King (2005)

Looking at the poster…what do you think the story is going to be like? We see a frozen body of a boy in the river, his hand slightly above the surface as if grasping for help…and a police officer looking grimly down at the body. Well I thought the story was a going to be a sad haunting look at a boy’s life and the events that will ultimately lead to his death.

After viewing it though…I was quite disappointed…it was never as haunting as what was potentially potrayed in the poster. I mean sure everything looked gloomy dark and sad…but it was snowing…so of course everything appears gloomy right? The characters weren’t very interesting too…I’m sure we were suppose to sympathize with several of the characters…the police officer whose brother died when he was young, the dead boy….who could have been murdered…and the dead boy’s best friend who had just lost her friend…but I didn’t really feel sympathy for any of the characters…I blame it on the weak character development. The movie itself was slow draggy and some times just didn’t make sense. The whole affair between the police officer and the teacher was one of them…I’m sure it was just thrown in for sex appeal…I mean even the character of the teacher…what was the significance of her character? Nothing. She only took pictures…which kinda have an image of a ghost in it…but then that leads to the question of the ghost…what happens to it? It appears…and disappears? What was the significance? More thought should have gone into this.

**Contain Spoilers**

Of course the most disappointing of all is the ending. The police and the school were quick to conclude it was suicide and close the case…and guess what it was suicide. Wow did they beat around the bush a lot before telling us that it was suicide after all…kinda felt cheated…don’t you. Anyway best that you rent…if you’re really interested to watch this…
