Aishwarya Rai plays Tilo, who belongs to some cult group that worships spices. She is sent to San Francisco to open a shop there and to help people using the mysterious powers of the spices. To be successful and faithful to her role of helping people with spices…she must obey three rules, never leave her store, never touch another person, or use the spices for her own gain. But as it so happens…she meets a man who she later becomes attracted to, who may force her to break all the rules.spice1.jpg

The similarities with Chocolat are pretty obvious…only difference…this deals with spices not chocolate…but I just found this one a tad more weird. Tilo belonging to some secret group…worshiping spices…sent to help people through the use of spices…ok…so the the intentions does seem noble…but the whole magical aspect of it is weird…at least in Chocolat…Juliette Binoche’s character, who makes chocolates that seem to have magical effects, opens a shop to feed her family…not to serve some higher purpose. And I didn’t like the subplot with Tilo helping her customers too…mainly…mostly cause most of the scenes were bad and not well acted.

The movie is sweet that I can say. A sweet magical fairytale…ends as you’d expect. The colours were pretty. And the shop…was pretty too…Never seen such a pretty spice shop before and Aishwarya Rai is as pretty as ever…Though as a romance flick…couldn’t really see much attraction, chemistry between the two leads….no foolish passion …lust…that would overcome Tilo to break all the rules. But anyway if you like romance flicks or Aishwarya Rai…then you’d probably enjoy this one.

lake-house.jpg

The Lake House is …if you don’t already know it is a remake of a Korean movie called Il Mare…Really curious if there were a lot of changes made compared to the original…lake-house2.jpgOk so the movie revolves around Kate a lonely workaholic doctor who has just moved out of her lake house, and she leaves a message in the mailbox for the next resident…So guess who gets this message…Alex a lonely architect who is the former owner…only thing is…he’s in 2004…and she’s in 2006. Impossible right? But it does happen to these two characters…and so they continue corresponding through the magical mailbox…soon love blossoms. Will they ever get to meet?

You know what…I quite like this movie…and its not even a genre that I usually particular enjoy watching. But I like it. The fall/winter setting was beautiful. The lake house was beautiful…I would never want to live in a glass house like that but I can’t deny its gorgeous. The characters were likable…Nice to see Keanu and Sandra acting together again, though…they share very little screen time together. Anyhow they still look good.lake-house1.jpg The perfect on screen couple. The plot, was ok…interesting enough and easy to follow. Quite different from most and there was even a climatic scene near the end…where the movie could go either way. Of course the whole plot with mailbox as the gateway to two time periods defies all logic…but what the heck…its a romantic fantasy and somehow it works. You find yourself rooting for the characters to arrive at the happiness they seek. Most of all…the end was satisfying…I mean…when you watch a romance or romantic/comedy movie…what type of ending would you want to see? (referring to the Break Up here)…So if you want to watch a charming romance flick this is it.

manhattan.jpg

I loved Match Point. Great movie there…I had only thought it was a romance/drama of some sort…and it turn out to be so much more. Which of course spark an interest to watch other Woody Allen films ( I soo want to watch Scoop…have yet to find it anywhere). And the only one I could get my hands on is this…Manhattan. It has really good reviews…has like a rating of 8/10 on IMDB…even touted as his best film. Seem like a romantic comedy that I would enjoy…

…Wrong…I didn’t quite enjoy it as I thought. Its not like I hated it or anything…its just I don’t get why its good…why its considered great…what makes it different…from all the other stories about love…What we have in this movie basically is Issac… a 40+ guy dating a 17 year old who he doesn’t really love…but much loves the city he lives in. One day he meets his friend’s mistress and soon begins an affair with her… Once the affair is ended abruptly…he is soon crawling back wanting to patch up with his girlfriend…the one he still doesn’t actually love…I guess one of the points being made here is people settle with whats there right? And etc…etc

The thing is…this film is just wayy too draggy…too much dialogue…sure some have a little humour but mostly its just…too boring for me…kept waiting for something interesting to happen…nothing does… And oh…I disliked Diane Keaton’s character…then again I’m sure she not meant to be liked. Wrapping up…not what I had expected…not for me at all.

The Golden Compass

golden.jpg

View trailer here. Ok…I kinda like the poster. The icy blue shades…kinda makes you think its a Snow Queen movie of some sort…and the huge polar bear reminds of those polar bears in Chronicles of Narnia. The trailer…hmm didn’t really like it…again looks too much like Narnia…from the colours…the effects…even how the animal looks like…Neither can I really get what the movie is about…and from my perspective…it looks all too similar to Narnia. Sure the poster and trailer looks pretty and all…but overall it doesn’t really grab me.

Becoming Jane

jane4.jpg

View the trailers here and here. Ok I love period/costume dramas. I love the effort trying to keep the language/settings/costumes true to the era. And I’m really looking forward to this. I like the trailers and all. The scenes look pretty…of course it definitely reminds me of Mansfield Park and Pride and Prejudice…I hope its as good.

Enchanted

View the trailer here. The trailer is out…but not the poster…thats weird. Haha…this film looks cute. The trailer starts off like the typical old fashion Disney fairytale with the whole singing thing… suddenly we see the princess being push into the fountain…and drops right into the real world…then she goes around New York looking for a way to get home to her prince…and ta da …she bumps into McDreamy. You know what I’m interested…seems like a fun comedy watch…How will a fairytale princess survive in the real world…

I Know Who Killed Me

iknow.jpg

View the trailer here. Hmm the blue glowing flower…it does look mysterious…with the blood dripping off it at the bottom…but other than that I don’t get the significance of the flower…what does it suppose to mean? This must be Lindsay Lohan’s first thriller right? The trailer is so so…has the typical trailer of a thriller look. First we meets Aubrey…then she goes missing…and when she’s found…it isn’t really Aubrey…its Dakota…a girl who looks like Aubrey ( Lindsay back to her Parent Trap days playing twins?)…Are they really twins? Different people? Or is the case of a split personality? I’m keen to watch this. I wanna know what happens. If I have to make a guess here…I think its the split personality thing.

Bratz

bratz1.jpg

View the trailer here. Another poster out. Now we get to see part of their face. The trailer is ok I guess for teenagers. We see some pretty girls wearing some pretty clothes…talking about being BFF (I hate the stupid BFF things)…Then we meet a mean girl who shows them the cliques ( like in Mean Girls isn’t it) at school and wants to seperate them (aww…what a major disaster)…somewhere along they do join the cliques and weren’t BFFs anymore…One day all being stuck at detention…they reunite believing that they should all be themselves and BFFs again…or something like that. Frankly I’m not really interested in this little flick…but I might just watch it…just to see how bad it could be…cause it does look a little crappy. Now I’m wondering when are they going to make a live action movie of Barbie.

The Break-Up (2006)

After a fight, Brooke and Gary breaks up. But both are unwilling to give up their luxurious condo and refuse to move. Thus war ensues.

So this is the movie which Jennifer Anniston and Vince Vaughn supposed hooked up…I don’t really follow hollywood gossip and I’m still not clear about the whole thing…did they or did they not hook up?

**May Contain Spoilers**

I don’t really expect much of this movie. Mainly its not a genre that I particularly like watching… anyhow…I was looking for something funny to watch and light hearted and so pick this one out. Overall I thought this was an ok film. Its not as funny as you might have guessed. I mean…some parts of it was funny…others…Well it was actually quite sad the rather pathetic way that Brooke called it quits thinking that Gary would then realised that he needs her…Meanwhile Gary is pretty clueless about how she feels and what her actions really mean…maybe she should have tried moving out right?….

After all the heartache and crying that the actors go through…you would’ve have thought that we finally get too see them get together…but nooo…they didn’t. Which kinda meant that that movie could have end in the first 30 minutes…eh? Not saying this movie was horrible or anything…but could’ve been much better with a better ending.

Just My Luck (2006)

Lindsay Lohan plays Ashley, the luckiest woman on earth. She’s young, has a great career, gets a taxi whenever she wants and the sun always shine when she’s out. But it all changes when she kisses a stranger at a costume party. He is the unluckiest man on earth and they somehow change their luck.

I read or heard somewhere that this was suppose to be Lindsay’s first venture into more adult roles…the character Ashley is about 23…but I didn’t really think it worked. She was hardly believable as a 23 year old….and a career woman??…No no…she still looked like as if she’s in high school. I’m not sure who’s to blame…her for not being able to play the role?…but then again it may have been written that way. The story and the script are pretty weak. Everything is just soo cheesy (Don’t you think it also has horrible posters?). And I can’t believe they actually have McFly in it…didn’t know until I watch the movie…obviously desperately trying to break into the American market. I think you can always tell that a movie is going to be bad once you see a pop band weaved into it as a back story.

Basically yes it was quite bad. Not something I would watch again. Its a movie for those who love teen flicks, romantic comedies or anyone below the age of 12.

If Only (2004)

Jennifer Love Hewitt doesn’t really act in much movies does she? Even if she does…it’ll be like in those crappy looking ones like The Tuxedo and Garfield ( I say that because I haven’t actually watch them) or her movies go entirely unnotice…at least thats what I thought happened to The Truth About Love and If Only. I don’t think they even got a theatrical release in Singapore…it was straight to DVD.

Well anyway…I actually liked The Truth About Love. I thought it was a rather funny, sweet and sad tale of a woman who believed she was in a happy marriage until she found out the truth…So when I found If Only at the rental store…thought I might like this one too…but nope I didn’t. I was truly bored…I wanted it to end.
The Truth About Love was sweet and even funny at times…but If Only was just extremely heavy on romance…and melodramtic too I thought. Basically the story is of Ian and Samantha… a young couple who love each other dearly… only problem is that Ian has trouble showing his love. One day, after a fight where they nearly broke up…Samantha dies in a car crash…and Ian regrets that he never told her how much he love her. Luckily for him though…by some miracle…he got to relive the day…Thus he tries to change little things…so that the end would be different and of course to tell Samantha that he loves her in every way possible….and blah blah…

The story was just ok…the dialogue was pretty bad…acting so so…Way too may cringe worthy moments. Sometimes I think…this was just an excuse to have Jennifer sing on screen…or maybe…she was just making use of the time she was in England (get it? The Truth About Love was also set in England). So overall…bad movie. Not recommended.
